Awareness
Each year, there are more than 6,500 strokes in British Columbia, killing more than 2,000 people. This makes stroke the third-leading cause of death in the province.
Most people survive a stroke, but for the rest of their lives, most are affected by neurological disabilities. This makes stroke the Number One cause of acquired long-term disability in adults.
The good news is that, armed with information, many British Columbians can reduce their risk of stroke. If you have a stroke, quick recognition of the signs and immediate treatment will dramatically reduce your risk of permanent disability.
On June 1 2010, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon launched its Signs of Stroke public awareness campaign. Visit the website for information and to watch the ad.
