BC Stroke Strategy
Every 10 minutes, a Canadian suffers a stroke; 6,600 of those are in B.C. More than 2,000 British Columbians die every year, and the survivors spend the rest of their lives with varying degrees of disability and impairment. In fact, stroke is the number one cause of long-term disability in B.C..
Stroke is a highly preventable and treatable disease. Reducing high blood pressure and maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle will dramatically reduce the risk of stroke.
In 2005, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon developed the BC Stroke Strategy to improve the recognition of, treatment for and rehabilitation from stroke. The strategy identifies gaps in the care and the standards of practice for stroke in B.C., and makes recommendations to close them.
The Foundation has also prepared a comprehensive business case outlining the benefits of implementing the Stroke Strategy: Innovations in Stroke Care, a Powerful Business Case for Priority Interventions in British Columbia.
